Dr. Michael Borger is more than a physician. He is a pioneer who has dedicated his life to changing the way we understand health and the human body. With over four decades of experience in family medicine and osteopathic therapy, Dr. Borger brings clinical depth and visionary insight to every page of his work.
Born in Kirksville, Missouri, the birthplace of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Borger’s journey took him from playing jazz in high school bands to studying sociology, social work, and medicine. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Des Moines University in 1977. He went on to practice family medicine in Indiana for over 40 years, serving in roles as a physician, city medical director, and clinical professor.
Self-Referral/Maximum Health challenges the foundation of modern medicine. Dr. Michael Borger introduces the concept of Self-Referral. It is the body’s built-in ability to heal and regulate itself. From decades of experience and research, he presents a new healthcare model that is based on consciousness and holistic well-being.
This isn’t just theory. It’s a call to action. Dr. Borger outlines practical tools like meditation and manual therapy that work alongside modern medicine to reduce chronic disease and lower healthcare costs.

The body isn’t a machine. It’s a self-aware, self-correcting system. Self-referral is the process by which your body knows itself and maintains balance. Dr. Borger explains how restoring this process is key to long-term health.
Modern medicine reacts to problems. The Health Approach prevents them. It focuses on what’s right with the body, rather than just what’s wrong which can revolutionize patient outcomes.
Through practices like Transcendental Meditation and Ayurvedic principles, the book shows how mental coherence and awareness directly affect physical health.
Dr. Borger doesn’t just criticize the current system. He offers a blueprint for change. From healthcare policy to physician training, he sees a future where healing is proactive and powerful.

To my thinking, the importance of this book is that it makes a very strong case for a particular suitcase of approaches to a more holistic view of wellness and health. Starting with a rather extensive dive into the concept of self-referral as an emerging paradigm for understanding health of both body and mind, the author, a physician with a DO, then explores with some depth the approaches that he has found from his lifetime of study and practice to optimize health, rather than merely treat the symptoms of disease
